The Kulosaari wool rug is a result of collaboration between Avotakka magazine, designer Tuulikki Peltonen, and VM Carpet. Each rug is woven in Finland, in the village of Karvala, Lappajärvi.
The Kulosaari rug, created in collaboration with Avotakka magazine and VM Carpet, is handcrafted from pure New Zealand wool. This long-staple sheep's wool can withstand heavy use. Additionally, the material is felted, making the rug soft and preventing wool fibers from shedding. The rug was designed by Tuulikki Peltonen, who also hand-signs the first 20 numbered rugs.
"The significance of rugs in interior design, in creating a cozy atmosphere, and in softening acoustics is unique. A rug is a fundamental product; without it, interior design lacks warmth. Rug weaving has millennia-old traditions and a vast array of styles and techniques. Rugs fascinate people – one could even say there's magic in them," says Kari-Otso Nevaluoma, Editor-in-Chief of Avotakka.
A soft rug brings a relaxed atmosphere to both the living room and bedroom. The sea, archipelago, coastal rocks, and a clear sky with scattered clouds served as inspiration for the rugs' gentle color palette and patterns. The stripes that punctuate the light background of the rug derive their colors directly from nature. Color options include blue, beige, and greige. The brown shades are achieved with Finnish willow. The origin of the fresh blue color is woad, also cultivated in Finland.
All rugs have undyed white wool as the base color. Additionally, the ends are finished with undyed linen.
